Denim Deluge

Project type

Textiles Art

Date

August 2024

Location

St Leonards

Indigo-dyed denim is one of the most popular and recognisable fabrics in contemporary fashion but, unfortunately, the production of this textiles involves enormous amounts of water consumption which contributes to the erosion of the land and rising sea levels. By isolating one of the most recognisable images of folds in worn denim the erosions create moonlit seascapes and drowned worlds. The transformation of these folds into waves of the sea strangely tells the story in reverse of how this textile came to be; the history of the body in terms of wear becomes a mirror of the history of the fabric itself. From water it returns to water. By reclaiming the refuse of the fashion industry we are salvaging the textiles and its history as objects of incidental beauty.
